Twenty-eight-year-old Ryan Andrew Gustafson was deported from the East African country last week after he was charged there with counterfeiting more than $180 000 worth of Ugandan currency.
He has been indicted in western Pennsylvania on charges that he printed at least $1.4 million in fake US currency, most of which was passed abroad but about $400 000 of which was sold online and shipped to the United States.
Federal prosecutors want a judge to keep him jailed for fear he’ll try to return to Uganda, where he has lived for several years and has a wife.
Gustafson’s attorney didn’t immediately return an e-mail seeking comment on Thursday’s proceedings.
