With Muhammadu Buhari installed as Nigeria’s president, the politics focus shifts to the election of Senate president, the second in the line of succession after the vice president. The leading candidiate is Bukola Saraki, Senator and former governor of Kwara State. Supporters say he will effectively support Buhari’s legislative priorities and point to his ongoing attack on alleged fraud related to the country’s oil subsidy as evidence he shares an anti-corruption agenda. Also contesting for the powerful post is Ahmed Lawan from Yobe State.
