A majority of victims of human rights violations in Nigeria do not report incidents against them, a development that leads to a recurrence of such infringements.
This is according to a public opinion poll, which also fingers police as the worst violators.
This is further corroborated by the Amnesty International Report of 2015 that almost 1 billion naira (US$5 million) has been paid out as compensation to victims of human rights violations by the Nigerian police.
According to NOIPolls, 76 percent of Nigerians do not report the breaches on their rights.
“As such, these rights are violated every day and these situations remain overlooked,” researchers said.
NOIPolls said violators should be diligently prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
This, the polling firm said, could be achieved rapidly by putting modalities in place for the proper enforcement of the laws that make sure that human rights are protected and promoted.
