Nigeria: Rivers Assembly Refuses To Swear In Female APC Lawmaker

The Rivers State House of Assembly has refused to swear in All Progressives Congress (APC) female lawmaker-elect, Victoria Nyeche, as member of the Eighth Assembly.

Speaker Dabotorudima Adam announced on the floor of the House on Thursday that he received a court order restraining the House from administering an oath-of-office on her pending the decision of court on a matter of impersonation levelled against her.

A state High Court presided over by Justice Adolphus Enebeli had on April 20 granted an interlocutory order stopping the swearing in of Nyeche of Port Harcourt Constituency 1.

The court order was based on a motion ex-parte filed by Livingstone Wechie.

Wechie, in his petition, alleged that Nyeche addressed herself as member of the Assembly, even when she had not been administered oath of office or sworn in.

The Speaker, however, sworn in 11 new members of the Assembly.
