Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has attributed the State’s inability to pay the salaries of civil servants to regularly to the current economic downturn and a legacy of heavy loans.
According to a Naij report, Fayose made his utterances in response to a letter served to him by President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Ayuba Wabba.
In his response, Fayose called on Labour to join in the fiscal restructuring of Nigeria’s economy while working towards a lasting solution to the indigent status of most states, Vanguard reports.
“It is also known that the current economic downturn is a national issue and consequently the inability of most State Governments to meet wage obligations as at when due.
“Our case is further made more precarious in Ekiti State by the heavy burden of debt left by the immediate past APC government of Dr Kayode Fayemi, on which over N1bn is being deducted from the State allocation monthly,” Fayose said.
The Ekiti Governor has since assured citizens that salaries will be paid and that his Government remains committed to the welfare of workers.
