Murder up 4.6% in South Africa

Cape Town – The number of contact crimes in the country has increased by 5 399 cases in 2014/15, including an increase in 782 cases of murder, Police commissioner Riah Phiyega said on Tuesday.

The latest crime statistics revealed that the figures for murder had increased from 17 023 in 2013/14 to 17 805 in 2014/15. This was an increase of 4.6 %.

Attempted murder increased by 3.2% (548 cases) to 17 537 in the period under review.

The number of total sexual offences decreased by 5.4% in the period to 53 617 cases, from 56 680 in 2013/14. This was a decrease of  3 063 cases.

Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm increased by 0.1% (223 cases) to 182 556, while common assault decreased by 2.8% (4 595 cases) to 161 486.

Common robbery increased by 2.7% (1422) to 54 927 cases from 53 505 in 2013/14, while robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 8.5 % (10 082) to 129 045 cases, from 118 963 cases.
