Mungiki To Blame For Collapsed Buildings In Nairobi

The Mungiki Sect is to blame for the enforced building and habitation of unsafe buildings in Nairobi’s eastlands, it has emerged.

The sect, outlawed by the government has deep roots in Eastlands Nairobi and it is said are to blame for the enforcement of buildings that are either built on unsafe grounds or without following the right procedures.

According to officials at County Hall in Nairobi, their efforts to stop the habitation of such buildings has fallen flat on the ground due to the intimidation by the Mungiki goons.

“It is basically hard to enforce the laws because Mungiki are on the ground and stopping them from existing is dangerous to the lives of officers,” a senior officer in the lands and buildings department of the Nairobi County government who refused to be named for security reasons told News24.

The official stated that the office of Governor Evans Kidero is in the know on the  operations of Mungiki but that they are a difficult group to deal with.

” Even the Governor knows that touching Mungiki is not an easy thing,” the official added.

Just recently, a six storey building in Huruma Nairobi collapsed killing 36 people and injuring close to 70 while 30 people are still missing.

The Huruma area is one of Mungiki’s biggest stomping grounds.
