A Member of the Embu County Assembly has said that witch doctors should pay an annual fee to the County government.

Newton Kariuki, who is the Muminji ward rep, said witch doctors make a lot of money from the rich clients who seek their ‘special services’ at night and should thus pay tax.

Kariuki was reacting to a proposal to have the witch doctor’s tax on Wednesday during a debate on the County Finance Bill.

He observed that a session with a witch doctor costs between KES 20 000 and KES 30 000, which could be a good source of revenue for the County government.

According to The Star, Kariuki wants an annual levy of KES 5,000 imposed on anyone wishing to start “witchcraft, divining, astrology, sorcery or rainmaking business”.

Witchcraft is enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya, but it is still not clear whether it exists or not.
