Police in Bungoma are holding a foreign pastor who is suspected to be behind widespread criminal activities in Bungoma town and its environs in which unsuspecting members of the public have been sold powder of crashed water taps as gold.
Bungoma County Administration Police Commander, Paul Soi said the suspect, a Tanzanian citizen by the name Michael Chacha, was arrested on Tuesday evening at Muteremko area with crashed water taps which they had stored in glasses preparing to sell it at a cost of KES 1.5m to certain businessman in Bungoma.
Soi said that the suspect, together with other accomplices who managed to escape the police officers who were trailing them, had also wrapped two AA batteries in glittering glasses to sell it as pure gold.
He said the suspect had a church rubber stamp based and the envelopes used for tithing, one water tap that had not been crashed and a Bible, adding that they have received intelligence report that they were working with other accomplices based in Kisumu where they have been conning unsuspecting members of the public.
The AP commander told the press that police are in hot pursuit of the other suspects who are Kenyan citizens to ensure they are brought to book as a soon as possible.
He warned members of the public to be on the look for such people and volunteer information to the police for appropriate action to be taken against them.
