A Malawian woman has reportedly been arrested in the country’s Mchinji district after she murdered her three sons by hitting them with a hoe handle.
Nyasa Times reported that Violet Tilire Phiri, 38, took her three children – Chisomo, 10, Limbani, 8, and Richard, 4 – to a distant garden away from their home, saying that she wanted to take them to pick mangoes. At the garden, she then proceeded to beat them to death with a hoe handle.
The crime was reported by fellow villagers after Phiri returned home carrying the body of her youngest son. The neighbours tracked her route, and found the bodies of the other two boys.
The Mchinji police discovered a health passport on Phiri, which stated that she had mental health problems.
Police said she would have to be examined at a hospital to see if her mental illness was to blame for the murders.
This came as brutal killings were said to be on the rise in the southern African country.
Nyasa Times reported in a different report that police in Mulanje district had arrested a 19-year-old man for stabbing his friend to death.
The report also said that an unidentified dead body of a middle aged man had been found in Blantyre, with no eyes and nose. The skin of his face was said to have been removed.
