Malawian Catholics Come To Blows During Church Service

Members of the Likuni Parish in the Malawian capital of Lilongwe exchanged blows on Sunday, following a disagreement involving a parish priest.

Kingsly Dandaula, a publicist at the Lilongwe police station, confirmed the incident, saying that no injuries had been reported during the scuffle.

According to Malawi24, some members of the church have been unhappy with the parish priest and had presented the matter to the Lilongwe Diocese for action.

Before a decision could be made, however, some members took it into their own hands to remove the priest from the church, thereby annoying other members of the church, and subsequently starting a fracas.

The Nyasa Times has since reported that non-Catholics were behind the fight, which was sparked in an attempt to tarnish the church’s image.

Police officials confirmed the arrest of 15 people in connection with the matter, saying that they have since been remanded to the Lilongwe Police Station.

“They have been charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace and will be appearing in court on Monday,” Dandaula said.

Catholic leaders have yet to comment on the matter.
