Malawi President, Lazarus Chakwera is set to meet the leadership of the Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) in a bid to reach a consensus to bring to a halt the ongoing teachers’ strike.

As reported by Malawi’s Nation Online, this comes a day after the ongoing discussions between the TUM leadership and government leadership hit a deadlock.

Malawi’s public school teachers have staged a strike, demanding bonus pay for working during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as better protective equipment.

Schools reopened on Monday this week, after a five-week closer as a result of an increase in COVID-19 cases, and the teachers reported to work, but refused to begin classes until the government meets their demands for high-risk pay and better safety equipment.

Malawi has so far registered 30,942 coronavirus cases and 1,021 deaths.
