Kenya: Pastor Ng’ang’a in Court, Denies Charges on Accident That Killed Mercy Njeri

Pastor James Ng’ang’a denied charges in connection to a fatal Limuru accident when he appeared at a Limuru court on Thursday.

Ng’ang’a was charged with conspiring against justice, causing death by dangerous driving, giving false information and failing to report an accident.

While seeking his release on bond, lawyer Assa Nyakundi said the Neno Evangelism Centre pastor has been cooperating with the police.

Ng’ang’a will remain at Gigiri police station pending Senior resident magistrate Timothy Tanchu’s ruling on Friday.

The pastor was charged alongside Simon Kuria, Kenya Police Airwing inspector Christopher Nzioka and Officer Patrick Baya, over the accident after which Mercy Njeri, 38, died.

Kuria, who presented himself as driver of the Range Rover involved in the crash, denied charges of giving false information to the police.

Baya and Nzioka, who served as Ng’ang’a bodyguard without being assigned to him, denied a charge of neglecting his duties.

There was heavy security outside the court with Ng’ang’a’s supporters being barred from entry.

The pastor spend Wednesday night at Gigiri police station following his arrest over the JUly 26 accident.

He was arrested at Java Milimani in Nairobi and taken to the traffic headquarters, where he recorded a statement.

His other lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, declined a request by police to take him to the government chemist to obtain DNA samples.

Through Ombeta and Nyakundi, Ng’ang’a had earlier asked the High Court to block his prosecution over the crash.
