Kenya’s director of prosecutions (DPP), Keriako Tobiko on Thursday snubbed journalists who protested against violent attacks and harassment in the line of duty.
The protests were organised countrywide following the death of a Kilifi-based Standard journalist, Joseph Masha.
Masha died of suspected food poisoning.
Even as the journalists were protesting, the Kitale County was mourning the brutal murder of another journalist by unknown gunmen.
According to The Star, 26-year-old Dennis Otieno was shot dead at his home on Wednesday night.
Nairobi based journalists met at Uhuru Park’s Freedom Corner in the capital before proceeding to the DPP’s office where they presented their petition.
In their petition, the scribes decried “harassment, stalking, physical abuse, online bashing, physical assaults online bashing, physical assaults and in some cases attempted assassinations of journalists on the basis of unfavourable reporting”, Standard reported.
However, Tobiko refused to meet with them, saying that he had better things to do.
A BBC report said that at least five journalists had died in kenya in a span of one year.
Fears were that journalists were likely to face more threats, as the east African country ready for presidential elections next year.
