Kenya: Meet Daniel Mwaura, Who Returned Lost $300

Mwaura’s story has warmed the hearts of numerous individuals. Up until this point, $1,300 has been raised as a reward for Mwaura who is expecting his second tyke in June.

Mwaura happened to be going about his normal work as a bus conductor, when he picked up a wallet belonging to a commuter. The wallet contained $300 (Ksh.30,000). Mwaura, who will soon welcome a baby, returned the money to the owner, and his selfless act has earned him praise all around Nairobi.

The lost wallet Mwaura picked up belonged to an old man who was going to the hospital to treat his child. Mwaura reported to the office where matatus park about a missing wallet with some money inside. He however held on to the money and asked that the man be directed to him. Two days later, the old man came looking for Mwaura who swiftly handed him back his $300.

The chairman of the Communication Authority, Ben Ngene Gituku rewarded Mwaura with the same amount of money Mwaura returned. A total of $1,300 (Ksh. 130,000) has so far been given to Mwaura for his honesty. Gituku told Nairobi News, “I felt touched by your story and wanted to appreciate the young man’s honesty. Honesty is one of the things we need to encourage in our society. Young people need to know that there are rewards in doing good.”

Mwaura has been receiving messages from people all over the country; some sending him money via M-Pesa (Kenya’s mobile money service), while others just thanking him for his good deed. The result of his action has extended to his wife who will receive free ante-natal care from Nairobi Hospital where their second child will be delivered.

Popular Kenyan comedian, Daniel Ndambuki who is known by the name Churchill will help Mwaura in his efforts to go back to school. Mwaura dropped out due to lack of money for school fees. He will be doing a Diploma in Information Technology at the Technical University of Kenya, where he is set to register.

Nairobi, which many call Nairobbery due to its high rate of corruption and criminal activities has its image battered. Hopefully, with good deeds like Mwaura’s, the city can begin to change its negative image through the actions of ordinary citizens.
