Kieni MP Kanini Kega has urged security officers to investigate if Mandera terror attacks were conducted by Al Shabaab or a local militia group.
Kega claimed that killers of quarry workers in North Eastern could be criminal groups in disguise of the Somalia-based terror group.
Speaking in his constituency after condoling with a family in Chaka whose kin, 40-year-old David Munene was among the six killed in last week’s Mandera attack, Kega called for a deeper probe.
The six were shot dead in a residential apartment in Belled Xawa town, where Munene was working as a lorry driver ferrying construction materials to various destinations in Mandera.
“In Somalia the Al shabaab kill indiscriminately. But in North Eastern Kenya we are told they separate natives and non-locals. Police could be rushing to blame Al shabaab while it is a criminal group purporting to be Al shabaab,” he said.
He decried that his constituency has continued to be affected by all terror attacks in Mandera, leaving more families in dismal poverty.
The lawmaker said members of Parliament were ready to divide more resources to Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), police service and to the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to enhance security at boarder points.
“It is unfair to kill a person based on religion of area of origin,” Kega stated.
He further disapproved at attempts of devolving security to counties, saying governors are likely to abuse the police officers and use them to harass their rivals in politics.
“There are reports that some governors have recruited their own security men who are not trained and are not police officers. Devolving security will be disintegrating communities,” said Kega.
