Nairobi – Journalists were thrown out of a stormy meeting called to deliberate on the cancelled Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results at Vihiga High school.
School principal Ezekiel Ayiego instructed journalists to be locked out of the school gate as parents, teachers and the board of management deliberated on ‘important’ issues regarding the results.
The 192 students who sat for their exams in the school last year did not get their results last week after they got Ys in chemistry.
“The media has been very unfair to this school giving us negative publicity ever since the results were cancelled. We cannot allow them to sit in this meeting and listen to what we are going to say,” Ayiego told parents, while ordering for journalists to leave.
He added, “Why have journalists just dwelled on reporting about Vihiga and not other schools where results have been cancelled?”
Ayeigo instructed school watchmen to escort journalists outside the school compound, until when the meeting was over.
Parents who attended the meeting blamed the principal for Knec having withheld the results for the school.
The parents demanded that students repeat at the school without paying a cent as it was not their problem results having been cancelled.
“How were parents involved in the cheating of the exams that led to the cancellation of results?” one parent posed.
Ayiego feared that journalists would report the school negatively if they were allowed to sit in the meeting till the end.
“I think the journalists should sit outside the school compound until when we are able to brief them on what has happened,” he said.
Last year, the school had to wait for a month before results were released after Knec withheld them for cases of irregularities.
