Kenya Exporting Sub-Standard Salt To Uganda.

Parliament of Uganda was last evening informed that Kenya has for a long time been exporting sub-standard salt into Uganda.

Parliamentarian Gilbert Olanya brought two salt sachets branded ”Habri Salt” and ”Sun salt” which he said originated from Malindi and Mombasa in Kenya respectively.

Olanya said, ”This salt has impurities. Even when you put it in water, some particles do not dissolve. That is very harmful to the consumers.”

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga asked the minister of trade, Amelia Kyambadde to give an explanation.

In response, Kyamabadde said he would take the two sachets of salt to the national bureau of standards for examination.

She said: ”I request honorable Olanya to provide me with those sachets so I can take them to Uganda national bureau of standards for study.”

She said appropriate measures will be taken after receiving the test results.

A good number of Ugandans have complained about salt imported from Kenya saying that it contains sand.

”For years, I have known that salt from Kenya contains sand. That is the reason I only buy salt from overseas in the supermarkets.”

He blamed national bureau of standards for not taking appropriate measures to ensure that salt imported into the country is safe for consumption.
