A diplomatic row pitting Kenya and the US government is in the offing after a mini-documentary painting the country as ‘irredeemably corrupt’ was aired by a top American public TV station.
Government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe on Thursday said Kenya is not happy with the video aired at prime time on Monday night by Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), a leading US public broadcaster.
Speaking during a weekly routine press briefing, Kiraithe said the government will write a formal protest letter to the US government over the video titled “How widespread corruption is hurting Kenya”.
“The government will be writing a strong protest letter to the United States. We have put up a spirited fight against corruption and even action has been taken on high profile people connected to graft. It is unfair to discredit the ongoing war against the vice just like that,” said Kiraithe.
“Those who have watched the video can attest that it is full of unsubstantiated claims, innuendo and assertions that are not backed by any evidence,” he said of the video, that also dwells on the Eurobond saga.
The controversial video is narrated by Nick Schiprin, a former foreign correspondent with Aljazeera Television Network and is produced by Zach Fannin.
It was beamed to millions of American homes as PBS is a prominent provider of television programmes to public TV stations in the US.
