During a recent interview with Nia Long, rapper Jeezy confessed that his wife Jeannie Mai’s attempts to salvage their marriage through treatment were useless. According to NewsofAfrica Africa, the Soul Survivor artist filed for divorce from the television show presenter in September after two and a half years of marriage.
But the 46-year-old told Long they put in effort to save their marriage. “Integrity intact, I could never say anything that would not honor somebody. But I can tell you that this has not been an easy journey. I can tell you that I’m saddened, I can tell you that I’m disappointed, I can tell you that I’m uneasy,” the rapper said, per Complex.
“But then again, God has put me in a different path, and that path is going to entail for me to take care of myself, and to love myself, and to be in the best situation. And I can thrive as someone who been through all the things I’ve been through.”
“I don’t like to fail at anything,” he continued. “I can only be responsible for myself. I can only do what I can do. I can’t expect someone else to do what I’m doing.”
Jeezy, whose real name is Jay Wayne Jenkins, became romantically involved with Mai, 44, in 2019 before they got married in March 2021. They also share a 1-year-old daughter.
The “I Might Forgive… But I Don’t Forget” rapper was initially mum after filing the divorce, but he broke his silence in a statement to XXL on October 19.
“The decision to end this chapter in my life was not made impulsively and comes with a heavy heart,” the rapper wrote in the statement. “Despite this, my love and respect for Jeannie remains and the time we spent together holds a cherished place in my heart.”
The 46-year-old rapper added: “Our beautiful daughter is the best gift from our relationship and I am committed to assuring she feels the love and stability she deserves. During this period, I kindly request that you respect our family’s privacy as we focus on healing.”
Mai also opened up about their separation during an appearance on Sherri Shepherd’s daytime talk show, Sherri. “I’m not going to lie,” Mai started. “It takes every day to just to really sit and just be quiet with your thoughts, take care of me. But one thing I know is, you give God your pain, he will give you his power, period. So, every day, I’m like, ‘Here you go. You got room for more? Here’s some more.’ Just taking it day by day.”
