Israel doctor: Palestinian hunger striker improving

An Israeli doctor says the condition of a Palestinian hunger striker has greatly improved – a day after Israel suspended his detention.

Dr Hezy Levy of Israel’s Barzilai Hospital says Mohammed Allan is showing “great improvement”. He says Allan has been taken off a respirator and has started to communicate. He said on Thursday Allan is “on the right path”.

Allan launched the strike more than two months ago to protest his detention without charge by Israel.

On Wednesday, Israel’s Supreme Court ordered the detention suspended because his condition had deteriorated. Doctors said he suffered brain damage.

It remains unclear whether Israel will release Allan if he recovers, or whether he has ended the hunger strike.

Israel has claimed Allan belongs to the Islamic Jihad militant group. He denies the allegation.
