Residents of Cherab Ward in Isiolo County have been walking more than 30 kilometers in search of water for the last two weeks after the only water pump that they depend on broke down.
The residents especially women are now walking to the neighbouring Merti Township in Wajir County in search of water where they pay KES.20 for a 20-liter-jerrican.
Women from the location held a demonstration asking the County Government to intervene and save them from walking for the long distances.
“Despite some heavy rains being experienced in some parts of Isiolo County, we are experiencing a dry spell in our area. The situation is affecting both human and livestock. We have to walk long distances in search of water,” said Amina Dida a resident.
She said the women risk attacks by wild animals besides enduring the scorching sun as they walk through the jungle to the neighboring county.
She said learning in local schools could soon be paralyzed if the broken water pump is not repaired.
