High School Students Burn Seven Dormitories Over Euro 2016

Students at Itierio Boys High School in Kisii County burnt down seven dormitories on Saturday after they were denied chance to watch Euro 2016 matches.

In the match, Portugal won against Croatia after playing till past mid-night in extra time, but the students started chanting at 8pm when they were ordered to leave the entertainment hall as per the school rules.

Daily Nation reports that apart from torching the dorms, the boys also stoned other buildings in the school as well as the neighbouring Itierio Girls High School.

They also tried to force their way into the Girls’ dormitories but were contained by the school security officers and staff.

This brings to 20 the number of dormitories destroyed in fire incidents in Nyanza,Standard reports, with electric faults and arson by protesting students being the main causes of the fires.
