Members of the Mombasa County Assembly are claiming that there is a plot by the government to eliminate their Governor, Ali Hassan Joho.
Speaking Tuesday during the afternoon session, Old Town MCA Mofard Amur said the Governor may stage the assassination or mysterious disappearance of Joho any time.
His claims were backed by other MCAs who said the government is plotting to employ a terror-attack style to eliminate their Governor, The Star reports.
Their claims come following a week-long standoff between the Governor and Interior Cabinet Secretary, Joseph Nkaissery over his guns.
On Thursday last week, the Firearms Chief Licensing Officer Samuel Kimaru wrote to Joho asking him to surrender his guns.
Joho however defied the order, saying he had not misused his firearms for the 20 years he has held them.
Nkaissery, not happy with the Governor’s conduct, took to the press saying that the government had provided him with enough security and thus holding a gun was a privilege he did not need.
He went ahead to order for his arrest, but this was blocked by the High Court that cited malice and contravention of the Firearms Act.
On Wednesday, Daily Nation reports that unstoppable Nkaissery went on to constitute an 8-member Firearms Licensing Board which is the only body mandated with the issuing, cancellation and termination of gun licenses.
