Government Looking For Owner Of Collapsed Mombasa Building

Mombasa County secretary Francis Thoya ordered the building to be immediately closed and search for the owner launched so he can be charged.

“This is a totally poor construction and lack of experienced contractors who did very shoddy job here. The building will be closed until repair work is complete before business resumes,” said Thoya.

This came after a section of the Nyali centre collapsed on Monday morning causing fear among its tenants.

The part of the building that had toilets, storage sections and water reservoirs crumbled.

Thoya said the collapse is an indicator of other dangerous premises within the County that exist without the County governments’ knowledge.

“We are going to conduct an inspection exercise in most of the buildings within Mombasa to ensure that the buildings are habitable before we allow any tenant to live or operate their businesses within them,” he added.

The Mombasa County Secretary warned the concerned departments within the County that they should follow the laws before they allow any contractors to carry on with any construction activities within the County.

However, no injuries were reported in the building that housed Eco bank, Java Coffee house and a gym and fitness business among others.
