Prosper Owusu, a student at Ghana’s Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), perished on Friday after being devoured by fire during a hall procession.
On August 25, Owusu, a third-year Mathematics student, was among other students of the school’s Opoku Ware II Hall who were purportedly involved in some activities around the hall when the terrible incident occurred.
According to accounts, Owusu was the “chief priest” of the school’s Opoku Ware Hall and frequently led traditional rites for the hall with daring antics. In social media footage, he can be seen rushing across the AAMUSTED campus after his outfit caught fire during a hall rite.
People attempted but failed to extinguish the flames. Owusu was transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for prompt medical attention, but died a few days later.
“The issues surrounding the incident at the Hall are being investigated. Management will give further updates,” the university administration said in a statement while extending condolences to the bereaved family, students, and friends of Owusu.
The statement also cautioned students to avoid activities that predispose them to risks and other dire consequences.
