Methany Thornton, an African American teacher from Marietta, Georgia, was given a fully furnished and decorated house for her and her family after closing on her new Habitat House.
Thornton and her husband, Kelcey, as well as her daughter and two grandkids, couldn’t believe their eyes when they first went inside. They felt completely at home in their decorated quarters.
According to Habitat for Humanity Northwest Metro Atlanta, the home dedication was made possible by the iTHINK Community Foundation of iTHINK Financial. Berkadia Credit Union also gave them a $500 check to utilize when they needed additional things for their new place.
Jessica Gill, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta, stated that this home dedication required a lot of collaboration. She emphasized the importance of living close to your workplace for a strong community.
“It took a lot of partners to bring this accomplishment to fruition today,” Gill told WSBTV. “Living where you work is a key component in building community, and partnerships like this one are fundamental to make local homeownership achievable, as well as thanking the public servants who serve us and our children.”
Thornton isn’t your typical teacher. She works as a Social Emotional Learning Teacher as well as a Cheer and Lacrosse coach at Marietta Middle School, where she has been for over 6 years.
Prior to this amazing turn of events, her family lived in Cartersville in a townhouse with no yard. They’ve since moved into a larger house, and she’s only a few minutes away from work.
Many of her kids gathered on her special day to show their support and gratitude for her persistent dedication. Thornton’s commitment for “paying it forward” as a teacher is described.
“Thank you for all that you do in the community for people like me,” said Thornton. “You truly are God-sent, and I pray that as you continue to bless others, God will bless you even more.”
