A family in Kirinyaga County is appealing to well-wishers to help them settle a KES.10 million hospital bill incurred by his daughter who has since passed on.
According to Samuel Murithi Githae, Coptic hospital in Nairobi has refused to release the body of Susan Wanjiru, 32, for burial, until the outstanding bill is paid in full.
Githae said he could not raise the millions required to settle the bill since he retired from the civil service 25 years ago with a meager pension.
“Our efforts have only enabled us to raise slightly over KES.1.2 million which is just a drop in the ocean compared to the huge outstanding balance the hospital is demanding,” he said.
He said that apart from the huge bill, the deceased has also left behind two young children aged three and six years since she was a single mother.
Githae said they took the KES.1.2 million to the hospital with the hope that they would get their daughter’s body for burial but the hospital insisted they had to clear the bill in full.
“We don’t know what to do anymore and this is why we are appealing for help from well-wishers including our beloved President Uhuru Kenyatta so that we can give our departed daughter a befitting send off,” he said.
The deceased’s mother, Ruth Wanjiku, said the death of her daughter had plunged the family into deep financial crisis leaving them helpless.
Wanjiku said her daughter was taken ill and admitted at the Aga Khan hospital in Nairobi on December 26, 2015 in serious condition.
She said they were later forced to transfer her from to Coptic hospital due to accumulated bill where she passed on 10 days ago.
Speaking at the family home in Sagana town, she said they are now stranded since the body cannot be released for burial until the bills for the two hospitals are settled.
