Head of communications Tozi Mthethwa on Monday said two other employees are still in hospital.
The employees, working in the eThekwini Water unit, were conducting routine maintenance to valves along Tatford Road when a vehicle lost control and pinned them against a wall.
The 38-year-old municipal handyman supervisor was in a stable condition when he left the accident scene. However, on arrival at hospital it was discovered that he had severe internal injuries including a head injury and crushed pelvic bones. He died after going into cardiac arrest later that evening, said Mthethwa.
She said one of the injured employees, who sustained minor injuries, was discharged from hospital on Friday but his condition deteriorated and was readmitted.
“Doctors amputated one leg. He remains in a stable but serious condition in hospital,” added Mthethwa.
The Mercury reported on Tuesday that the police were investigating a case of culpable homicide against the 17-year-old driver.
