Durban – A 30-year-old KwaZulu-Natal pilot escaped unharmed after he had to perform an emergency landing at Durban’s North Beach on Sunday afternoon, KZN Emergency Medical Services said.“Paramedics and fire fighters from [the] eThekwini fire department responded to the crash at around 14:30 this afternoon [Sunday]. Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the 30-year-old pilot, safely out of the aircraft and talking on his cell phone with air traffic control,” spokesperson Robert McKenzie said.
“He was examined by an advanced life support paramedic from KZN EMS, and after recovering from the initial ‘shock’ of the incident, it was confirmed that he had not sustained any injuries, and he decided that he did not wish to be taken to hospital.
“According to the paramedics who were on scene, the pilot was reportedly taking the plane on a test flight, and was on his way back to the airport at the time of the incident.”
McKenzie said there were reportedly “not many people” on the section of the beach where he landed.
“But after the event it drew a large crowd of onlookers,” he said.
“Circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.”
