County Government To Buy SchoolBoys Free Underwear

The County Government of Nyeri has proposed that school going boys in both public and private schools be given free underwear.

In the 2016/2017 budget proposal, the County government has asked for increased funding to the departments of Education and Special Programmes to cater for the underwear.

Under the proposal, the boys will get at least three pairs of underwear while girls get sanitary towels.

The Chief Officer in charge of Special Programmes, Beth Karimi said the government decided to give free underwear after the boys felt left out when sanitary towels were being distributed to the girls.

Karimi said the project, which is outlined in the County Fiscal Strategy Paper (CFSP) 2016, will cost KES 1.6 million if approved by the County Assembly.

The Budget committee Chairman Duncan Gituanja said the 2016/2017 budget is expected to increase from KES 6.2 billion to KES 6.36 billion.

The CFSP has set the Education and ICT budget ceiling at KES 304 million.

The health department will receive the highest amount of KES 2.2 billion which is 34.58 percent of the total budget.

Charles Githinji, who is Executive Secretary in charge of Health Services, said that 68.1 percent of the health department budget goes to paying of salaries and allowances.
