Police have arrested five suspects following a shootout on Tuesday afternoon in the streets of Montclair, Durban.
The shootout happened after police received information about a suspected stolen vehicle that was parked in the area.
The SAPS K9 unit and Montclair police, assisted by the provincial highway patrol unit, were conducting crime prevention duties in the area.
The suspects attempted to flee on foot when police entered the premises where the car was parked. Officers chased after them.
The suspects allegedly opened fire on the police and a shootout ensued.
One suspect was shot and wounded. All five suspects were arrested.
Police recovered an unlicensed firearm which will be sent for ballistic testing to decide if it has been used in other crimes.
The suspects are due to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon. They are facing charges of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
