Cairo – A bomb Wednesday night exploded near a police station in central Cairo, government officials said.

Health Ministry spokesperson Khaled Megahed said two people were wounded in the explosion, which occurred behind the Ezbakia police station in the Ramsis Square, state-run newspaper al-Ahram reported online.

Egyptian television, citing an unnamed security official, said that the blast damaged a police car and a motorcycle.

No-one has claimed responsibility. The blast occurred less than two weeks before the country’s parliamentary elections.

Egypt has seen a spate of militant attacks targeting security forces and facilities since the army’s 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi following massive street protests against his rule.
