Inspired by women from all walks of life and spanning multiple sectors, BBC’s list of 100 women from around the world who are inspiring others through solution-driven work or their actions on the ground was released on Wednesday.

Mixing things up this year, the BBC selected 60 women who were announced today, while the remaining 40 women will be identified from a series of challenges and workshops to be held at the grassroots level over the next few weeks.

“They might be someone working on a solution on the other side of the world, the woman who suggested the piece of code, the woman who named the campaign, or the woman who, by courageously sharing her story, inspired the solution,” the BBC said.

Here are the other African women recognised so far this year:

Adelle Onyago – a Kenyan radio and TV host who is hoping to empower young women through mentorship and apprenticeship programmes.

Anita Nderu – a Kenyan TV presenter and radio news anchor at Capital FM who is passionate about mentoring youth.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf –the 24th and current president of Liberia. Johnson Sirleaf is the first woman to be elected head of state of an African country.

Marieke Jamme – a self-made Senegalese businesswoman who taught herself how to read and write at the age of 16.

Naomi Mwaura –the lead organiser of the anti-harassment protest #MyDressMyChoice, which was fundamental in bringing change to harassment laws in Kenya.

Talent Jumo – a sexual and reproductive health activist from Zimbabwe. Jumo supports victims of revenge porn, giving them counselling and legal advice.
