Three teenage girls have been shot dead by suspected herdsmen at Elnasich water point in Illeret location Isiolo County.

Police said the girls aged between 16 and 18 years were found dead with gunshot wounds by a herd’s boy.

Area Police boss Ben Kogo said preliminary investigations indicated that the girls were headed to the water point to fetch water when they were attacked at around 3:30pm.

He said due to poor communication network and inaccessibility of the area, security agents got the information late.

The CPC said the police are yet to establish the motive of the killing.

He termed the incident unfortunate as it came after a peace meeting was held in the area, adding that investigations were giving possible leads to the culprits.

Kogo ruled out counter attack or revenge between two neighbouring communities as livestock stolen from one of them were being returned to owners.

He said so far, 412 goats and sheep that were stolen three weeks ago have been recovered.

Herders from two pastoralist communities have engaged in persistent conflicts in the strategic grazing areas of Buluk and Darade over water and pasture
