Kenyan JSC Travels To The Hague City In Search Of New Chief Justice

  • The Hague city in the Netherlands is expected to have a more entrenched historical significance in Kenya’s justice system.

In the years following the 2007/8 Post Election Violence, the Dutch city received a lot of publicity after it emerged that the ICC, which sits at the Hague, would be handling the investigations and Prosecution of the Kenyan suspects.

As the country prepares for a new Chief Justice, an interesting footnote in the hiring process will be the venue chosen for the deliberations – The Hague.

This is after it emerged that members of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) would be travelling to The Hague where they will hold deliberations leading to the selection of a CJ candidate.

The decision to travel was made in light of the fact that Attorney General Githu Muigai will be appearing at the International Court of Justice in a case where Somalia has sued the Republic of Kenya over a maritime boundary row.

Unconfirmed reports have indicated that another commissioner, Prof Tom Ojienda, will also be involved in the Kenyan case.

The JSC is expected to hold deliberations on the sidelines of the Kenya Vs Somalia case before returning back to the country on Thursday.

This means that the successful candidate will be unveiled to Kenyans before the end of this week.

Experts have speculated that candidates David Maraga, Smokin Wanjala, and Alnashir Visram have an upper hand in the race that saw 11 applicants interviewed as possible replacements to Dr Willy Mutunga.
