A couple suspected to be behind a series of armed robberies in Nyeri has been arraigned in court.
Alex Mathenge and Vanensa Wambui were charged with four counts of preparing to commit a crime and for being in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
On the second count, the court heard that on August 11, in Nyeri town at Nanyuki terminus they were found armed with intent to commit a crime.
Thirdly, they were charged of being in possession of a Ceska pistol with five rounds of ammunition.
They were lastly charged with consorting with a person in possession of a firearm.
They appeared before resident magistrate Onesmus Towet.
However, they denied all the charges and the prosecution rushed to object their release on bonds.
State counsel Allan Wanjohi said the accused persons were in the police list of wanted criminals.
He told the court that Mathenge should be denied bond since he had just been released from the King’ongo GK Prison Nyeri just a week before his arrest.
In response, Mathenge refuted prosecution’s claims saying he had been jailed for violent robbery though he was not involved.
“I had been jailed for a crime that I had not committed and even this one that is before the court I did not commit it. I should not be remanded for a crime I have not committed and which is pending before this court,” said Mathenge.
On her part, Wambui prayed for bond saying she was expectant as she complained that during the arrest she was manhandled by members of the public and police officers.
While delivering the ruling, the court ordered that Mathenge be remanded while his lover be released on a KES.200,000 bond as the case was scheduled to be heard on September 15, this year.
