Kenyan soldiers have been injured in an IED attack in Lamu, close to the Somali border.
More than five Kenya Defence Forces KDF soldiers are nursing injuries after their tank ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) at Ishakani area in Kiunga division, Lamu East on Tuesday morning.
The Star reported that the soldiers, who are said to have cleared bushes at a site where the security perimeter wall is being put up on the Lamu-Somali border, escaped death by a whisker in the 9 am incident.
Their carrier unknowingly ran over the IED, suspected to have been planted by Al Shabaab militants who have terrorised the region for the past two years.
A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the damage done to the tanker was however irreparable.
The Shabaab and The KDF have been embroiled in a long standing tussle over the border region, with militants occasionally carrying out attacks to hurt Kenyan forces.
Citizen TV reported in February that the KDF killed four Shabaab militants in the region, following an attack on a village in the same Lamu area.
Somalia has been heavily affected by the Shabaab threat.
Suicide bombers killed at least seven people as they tried to blast their way into the African Union’s main peacekeeping base in Somalia’s capital on Tuesday, The Daily Nation reported. The force of the explosions shattered windows at Mogadishu’s nearby airport, showering arriving passengers with glass, said witnesses.
