Thousands of Kenyans who missed to file their tax returns are pleading with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to extend the deadline that ended on Thursday midnight.
A number of them said they were unable to file the returns through KRA’s online iTax system saying there were delays.
However, KRA’s Chief Tax Manager Nairobi, Judith Njagi ruled out the possibility of extending the deadline.
“They should have filed their returns earlier because they are due from January to June,” she said.
On Wednesday, KRA said it registered the highest number of Kenyans filing their tax returns with over 128,000 returns filed in a single day.
The authority said it had extended the hours of operations at the iTax Support Centers countrywide to assist those who had not filed their returns beat the 30th June, 2016 deadline.
“iTax Support Centres have been open from Mondays to Fridays and throughout the weekend. More technical officers have also been on the ground ensuring that the iTax system is operating seamlessly without any hitches,” KRA said in a statement.
According to KRA, iTax has doubled the number of registered taxpayers since last year.
“We now have four million Kenyans registered on iTax compared to the two million last year,” KRA said.
