Amani National Congress party leader Musalia Mudavadi has said the offer by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission commissioners to resign is a waste of time.
Mudavadi said after the intense pressure exerted on the commissioners from both quarters in the country, they should not be offering to resign, but should have already resigned.
“All indicators are clear that no one in the country trusts the IEBC. They should resign so that proper structures are put in place in preparation for the country’s next General Election,” he said.
He added, “We need to have an ample time to come up with a team that will not tamper with the tallying system, use machines that are not working and be involved in electoral malpractices.”
He spoke when he attended a requiem mass for Mama Zipporah Kadogo at Mutsulyu primary school in Vihiga County yesterday.
Mudavadi urged leaders in the country to learn from outgoing British Prime Minister David Cameron whenever citizens lack confidence in their leadership.
He said leaders in the country do not respect the will of the people even when their leadership is marred with inconsistencies, corruption and a general lack of trust.
“The referendum in the United Kingdom should act as an eye opener to our leaders in the country. Cameron as a person said the people of UK had spoken through the referendum and noted he would respect the will of the people by resigning,” said Mudavadi.
The Britons on Thursday voted to leave the European Union prompting Cameron to announce his imminent resignation that will be effected in October.
Cameron announced his resignation early on Friday after the defeat was interpreted as a vote of no confidence in his leadership.
Mudavadi said IEBC leaders should learn from Britain and quit office like Cameron did even before people questioned his competency, regardless of the much he has done and achieved for the country.
Vihiga MP Yusuf Chanzu said the commissioners should quit allowing for a competent team to be put in place.
