Wherever you turn whether looking for a date or just in the office, church or social event, you will notice an alarmingly high number of single women in our society who have kids. You begin to wonder where the dads are. Either the men are so irresponsible or the women are widows. This may be true in some instances but not all the cases.
There is an increasing trend to view marriage as bondage for many women. The august institution has taken a beating from the media and pop culture and has definitely lost it luster.
The reasons for single mothers are quite varied but there is a recurring theme of secularism. Things fall apart. The society has disintegrated and people are individualistic in nature.
When a couple meets, they are heads over heels in love and marry or get into come we stay and then babies follow. Soon they discover that their personal interests are not being taken care of by the union and want out.
The government, banks and jobs are providing the financial security that men traditionally were expected to provide to the women. In the event of a fallout or dispute, the lady feels that she has very little to lose. If she was the breadwinner she continues to take care of the kids minus one extra loud mouth. If she was being provided for then the courts ensure that the man continues to provide for her and the kids without benefiting further from the union. This is appealing for the lady as it is a win-win for her. She gets to keep the benefits of the marriage without the attendant responsibilities like withstanding the negative habits of the hubby.
Another reason for the ubiquitous single mothers is the rampant sex education and activity among teenagers. When teenagers enhance in sex, it’s usually unprotected and they are not ready yet for marriage. The lady is left holding the sac.
Another reason is prevalence of illicit sex among girls and married men fondly referred to as sponsors. These men have no intention of leaving their families and when the music and excitement fades, the lady is left to face the music alone with her baby.
Lastly, we have the fiercely independent post modern women who want freedom as well as answering the call of motherhood. They get a willing donor to impregnate them and then continue from there as single moms.
What remedies do we propose for this scourge given that there are many negative ramifications for raising kids especially boys without fathers and father figures?
