Wife Of Police Officer Arrested For Battering 10-Year-Old Niece

ARREST

The wife of a police officer has been arrested for reportedly battering her 10-year-old niece, Naij reports.

The suspect, Caroline Akankwa, a trader, was allegedly nabbed by police officials after it was gathered that she had been forcing the child to perform household chores and run her business, beating her for every mistake until her back was covered in sores.

The child, identified as Chioma Uneneme, was discovered with scars on her back and buttocks after her teacher noticed that she was bruised and took her to a nearby hospital.

The school wrote to the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD) on the matter, thereby causing officers to spring into action over the matter.

While confessing her crime to officials, Akankwa claimed that she never intended to hurt the child, instead saying that she beats her niece like she beats her own children, Punch reports.

Akankwa has since been arraigned in a family court in Surulere, pleading not guilty to a charge of assault and being granted N100,000 bail in return.
