Rabat – The Moroccan state information company claims a migrant from sub-Saharan Africa has actually passed away after attempting to cross from Morocco right into the Spanish territory of Melilla via the sewage system.
The MAP news agency reported the man was evacuated from the sewer by local authorities along with three other migrants. He was hospitalised in the Moroccan border town of Nador and died on Tuesday.
MAP said the other three migrants were treated and released.
The Moroccan government did not comment on the unusual incident.
Nador is a magnet for thousands of migrants who travel north across Africa to try to cross into Europe in Spain’s North African enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta, by hiding in cars or ships.
