President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday morning cancelled a planned visit to Ogoniland in Rivers State for security reasons, a development that has triggered reactions on the social media.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was assigned to represent the president.
Buhari was expected to launch a much-delayed programme to clean up areas heavily polluted by oil exploration and production.
The clean up of the heavily polluted Ogoni land was recommended by the United Nation Environmental Programme, UNEP, in its report in 2011.
The Niger Delta Avengers, who have claimed responsibility of a number of pipe line explosion, have issued a threat to the president’s life if he visits Ogoniland.
