The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, has directed the Assistant Inspectors General of Police and the Commissioners of Police in South-East and South-South to immediately disarm members of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB).
This follow premeditated attacks on police officers engaging in operations aimed at restoring public order in some states.
The IGP noted that the targeted attacks on police personnel, who had been performing their statutory functions, portrayed the IPOB activists orchestrating alleged insurrection as having “crossed the threshold in their misguided attempt to test the common will of the nation.”
Arase also condemned the alleged killings by members of IPOB and directed the arrest of any member of the group found in possession of firearms.
He said all IPOB members arrested in connection with the killing of the policemen should be charged to court.
“The Nigeria Police Force will continue to diligently work towards eliminating any threat to internal security and assures Nigerians of its commitment to their safety and security,” Arase said.
IPOB is agitating for the independence of the Biafra.
