30 Feared Dead After Clash Between Pro-Biafrans, And Security

Not less than 30 people are feared to have been killed following a bloody clash between pro-Biafran protesters and security forces in Onitsha, Anambra State.

According to a Punch report, Biafra activists were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the Biafra republic when the occasion turned violent.

Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are said to have clashed with security in Onitsha while a separate clash broke out between members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and policemen in Asaba, Delta State, The Nation reports.

Emma Powerful, spokesperson for IPOB, lamented the development, claiming that 25 unarmed members of the Nkpor were killed without cause from operatives in the area.

“As I speak to you, and from the statistics we have on the ground, 22 of our members were also killed in other parts of the state, just like that.”

Leadership within MASSOB has since distanced themselves from the clash in Onitsha, stating that they did not work in collaboration with IPOB in order to agitate security personnel.

The corpses of those killed in Onitsha have yet to be produced, while an eyewitness claims that they saw two dead bodies following the clash.

Final numbers regarding casualties have yet to be confirmed by police.
