Activists in Malawi are set to storm parliament on May 25, Africa Day, over concerns regarding the continued killing of albino nationals in the country, Nyasa Times has reported.
The Citizen Alliance, an umbrella body of non-governmental human rights organisations in Malawi, said that Africa Day presented an opportunity to talk about the scourge of albino attacks and killings, particularly in Malawi but also throughout the rest of the continent.
“The government is doing little to put the situation under control. The government needs to do much to protect people with albinism,” said Edward Chileka Banda, Chairperson for Citizen Alliance.
News24 previously reported that at least 17 albino nationals had been killed in attacks within the last 2 years.
Aside from this, 14 albinos had reportedly been kidnapped, while three were still said to be missing.
The increase in albino attacks had led to widespread fear among the albino community in Malawi, with albino children missing classes due to fear of being attacked or killed by ‘albino hunters’ who sold body parts from their victims on the black market for huge returns.
