Seven Perish In Bungoma Road Crash.

Seven people on Tuesday perished in a tragic road accident along at Kibunde Bridge along Bungoma-Bokoli-Kimilili road when a seven-sitter Nissan matatu collided head-on with the lorry that was carrying sand.

Confirming the incident, Bungoma County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said the lorry was heading to Bungoma town while the Matatu was heading to Kimilili.

“I can authoritatively confirm that seven people are dead while five others were rushed to hospital in critical condition. We are still expecting the death toll to rise because it was a fatal accident,” he said.

He said the driver of the matatu was among those who perished on the spot in the 3pm accident while the lorry driver was slightly injured when the accident occurred.

The official said among those who perished was a father and his daughter who was going back to school for the second term.

An eyewitness, Joseph Nyongesa said that the accident occurred when the over-speeding matatu driver lost control of his vehicle in the road that is full of potholes.

“The Kibingei Daraja mbili area is full of potholes and drivers always compete on this road so they can do many trips but on this fateful day things did not go well for the driver, he failed to brake and collided head-on with the lorry,” said Nyongesa.

He said that the matatu is supposed to carry seven passengers but it normally ends up carrying five more passengers.

The injured were rushed to Kimilili sub-county hospital, Bokoli dispensary and Bungoma County referral hospital for medication.
