As the showdown between the government and opposition over the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) continues, a Human rights lobby has said that the situation is getting out of hand.
Haki Africa says the IEBC debate has caused a lot of tension in the Country with the government failing to give the way forward over calls to disband the electoral body.
Addressing the press at Haki Africa offices in Mombasa Thursday afternoon, the group Executive director Khalid Hussein said the last Monday incident where opposition was dispersed with teargas was a total violation of their rights and the government should initiate dialogue over the matter.
“We should not ignore the calls from opposition; they may be representing views of most Kenyans. Let the leaders embrace dialogue and solve this problem once and for all,” said the human rights icon.
Hussein added that the ongoing push-and-pull over between the two camps may result in unrest.
“Our leaders should embrace dialogue so as to avert tension in the country ahead of next year’s elections,” noted Haki Africa Executive Director.
Hussein urged both parties to solve the whole IEBC issue so that the country can remain united.
Already, CORD Leader Raila Odinga has vowed to unite Kenyans to picket at all IEBC offices countrywide until all of its commissioners go home.
Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta has warned the opposition against picketing and instead urged them to follow the due process in dissolving IEBC.
