Residents of Kirinyaga County wants the county government to urgently install coolers at the Kerugoya level five hospital mortuary to spare them the distress of transporting bodies to Embu.
The hospital’s mortuary has been without coolers since 2013 despite the County Assembly setting aside KES.7.7 million for the equipment.
The residents who were giving their views in Mwea during a public meeting said lack of the coolers exposed them to suffering as they are forced to transfer the bodies to other private facilities while making burial arrangements.
Mutithi Ward MCA, Jenaro Njaamumo said the money allocated for the equipment has been lying un-utilized since the fund was voted in 2013.
“The County Executive Committee (CEC) member for Health owes the residents of this County an explanation as to why this money is not used for the intended purpose as they continue suffering and I blame the county government for the letdown,” Njaamumo said.
The assembly committee chairman for health, David Mwangi explained that the recently introduced e-procurement was to blame for the delay in buying the much needed equipment.
“We were cut short in the middle of the procurement process of these coolers after we were slapped with the e-procurement rule by the Treasury, a move that has stalled the process, but I can assure you we are just about to achieve the goal,” Mwangi said.
The County Assembly, which was holding its sittings in an open forum at Ngurubani town for the first time, blamed some CEC’s for allegedly providing poor services to the residents.
